A Sri Lankan migrant has launched a political party that runs on an anti-multiculturalism platform.

Rise Up Australia already boasts about 1,500 members and plans to run 65 candidates in the upcoming federal election.

"Rise Up Australia Party, which is committed to keeping Australia for Australians, is utterly and completely opposed to multiculturalism," says Rise Up Australia's founder Daniel Nalliah.

The Sri Lankan-born pastor draws on his own migrant past in defence of assimilation.

His message has the backing of international figures. "If you come here, then follow Pastor Danny's example and enjoy it and celebrate it and do not seek to destroy it," says Christopher Monckton from the UK Independence Party.

The leader of the new party has come under fire in the past for anti-Islamic comments, but he wasn't backing away from making controversial statements again today.

"True Muslims are radicals, unfortunately. If they practice the Koran, they're radicals," he said.

If elected, Rise Up wants to restrict the number of Muslims calling Australia 'home'.

The party has 1,500 supporters across the country, and is putting forward 52 candidates in the Lower House and a dozen in the Senate in the upcoming federal election.

Many of the supporters are concerned about what they claim is the "Islamification of Australia".

"If we're not careful, we're going to lose this country," said a supporter. "I don't want to see Sharia Law in Australia," said another.

But Iqbal Patel from Muslims Australia says that's far from happening.

"Nobody wants to impose Sharia law in Australia, I mean, far from it. That's the last thing that anybody wants to do".

The Vice-President of the Muslim association insists it's a free country, and supporters of Rise Up can vote as they chose.

"If they want to try and get any mileage on the backs of Muslims, and blame Muslims for all the ills of Australia, then I think that itself is very short-sighted of them," he said.

But he says it's sad that someone would exploit Islam for political gains.

Maybe.I would like to think so.We do not know. I am against all extremists.I my opinion they are insane.Live and let live I say If you get a chance help any one that needs it do so. As for Muslims I am sure the majority of these people want a peaceful life with no hassles

Political Correctness

Shane - from Brisbane, 3 months ago

True Australians are Nationalists. They love their Country and its Citizens. Muslims can never be considered Citizens of any Western Country because they are the opposite end of the spectrum. We love freedom of speech, They don't. Sharia law forbids Political Parties, however i would still consider Islam to be a Fascist Ideology. Sharia law, if implemented, will destroy this country. Just look at what happened in Afghanistan when sharia law was implemented. Islamification must be combated.

What about me?

Maria - from Perth, 3 months ago

What about ppl like me. Born & bred in Australia, lived a christian lifestyle then converted to islam. Islam is the religion I chose for me, its what I believe. I am Australian and I am muslim. Ive never committed a crime in my life, never made trouble, proud to be Aussie yet also proud to be muslim. So what does the pastor suggest for muslims who were born and bred in Aust or who were even 5th generation Australians. I would say a 5th gen aussie muslim has more say than a sri lankan migrant.

Say No to Sharia and help women

the left would have us believe that all cultures are equal - its simply not the case and if you go travelling around the world you will see it. The moment someone says this however they are seen and called racist. Sharia law vs secular judeao christian law? How about feminism, gar rights? Hello?

Stop all the hatred and extremism

HNS - from London, 4 months ago

There are many, probably tens of millions of NON-Muslims (Christians, Jews etc) in Australia, America, Europe and elsewhere in the world who commit murder and other serious crimes, it is obviously NOT just Muslims! It is just plain racist to assume that Muslims are responsible for everything wrong in this world. Btw, Islam is a peaceful religion and people like al Qaeda and the Taliban are not true Muslims, whether the racist folk who post here like it or not!!

What is Christianity?

earthfan - from Perth, 4 months ago

It is both unreasonable and irrational for you to attribute to Christianity, behaviours that are in direct contradiction to its teachings. Kings, popes, inquisitors or priests do not define Christianity. It is defined by the teachings of Christ and his apostles. Bad things happen when Christians fail to follow Christ's teachings. Bad things happen when Muslims FOLLOW their vile Qur'an. People vote according to their beliefs. We should be careful to whom we give a vote in our democracy.

How faith can still possibly play any part in any sort of democracy is beyond me. Five of the best words in the English language are 'separation of church and state'. Openly aligning ones self with any kind of theistic view should be immediate disqualification from public/government office. Muslims are no worse than Christians any way...

Why such indiscriminate and record rates of immigration anyway?

NIMBY - from Melb CBD, 4 months ago

Immigration is far too high, so why discriminate with pinpointing Muslims? Our record numbers of immigrants is denying Australians jobs, affordable housing, high standards of living and driving up our population pressure. The only immigration should be replacement levels, that keeps our population stable, not our massive growth rates hurtling towards unwanted "big Australia". It assumes that people, no matter their beliefs, are simply economic units, and nothing else matters.
