Tony Abbott preferred PM: poll
Support for the Coalition has risen 4 points, taking its primary vote to 47 per cent - its highest level since just after the carbon tax began in July 2012. (AAP)
A new poll shows opposition leader Tony Abbott has overtaken Julia Gillard in the preferred prime minister stakes.
The federal government's standing with voters has dropped again, while Julia Gillard has lost her lead as preferred prime minister, a new poll shows.
Labor's primary vote stands at just 30 per cent, according to a Herald/Nielsen poll published in Fairfax newspapers.
It's a dip of 5 points since the last survey in December.
Support for the Coalition has risen 4 points, taking its primary vote to 47 per cent - its highest level since just after the carbon tax began in July 2012.
On a two-party-preferred basis, Labor's support is at 45 per cent, well behind the 55 per cent for the Coalition.
Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has also overtaken Julia Gillard in the preferred prime minister stakes, with his support leaping by 9 percentage points to 49 per cent compared with Ms Gillard on 45.
The national poll of 1400 voters found the gap between Ms Gillard and former prime minister Kevin Rudd has also grown, with Mr Rudd favoured by 61 per cent of respondents to just 35 per cent for her.
It comes as Mr Rudd rubbished suggestions on Sunday that he was planning another tilt at the ALP leadership.
He said there was no leadership stoush, reiterating that he and the Labor Party had full confidence in Ms Gillard's leadership.

The NSW O'Farrell Government is just a minor prelude to what will happen under an Abbott government. Look how O'Farrell uses his mandate to make unilateral decisions such as James Packer's casino! And Campbell Newman's Qld government is equally outrageous. Yes NSW Labor is rotten to the core, & Gillard's Labor has made strategic errors, none of which have been costlyy or destructive, but that's no reason to put a person of Abbott's pugnacious demeanour in a position to run amok. And he will

I live in Western Sydney NSW,people here are sick of this Labor Govt.i live on a aged pension,it is my only income.when elect, gas, phone accounts arrive i have to cut back on food and until my next pension day i eat only the very cheapest food, this is usually baked beans, noodles and a little bread.I always believe our country works better under a Liberal GOVT.PM. GILLARD has made a big mess of our beautiful country, she is hurting people.
Australia ranked 4th dumbest nation on earth per capita.America no 1.
Australia deserves a abbott led government. This will be the last decade of conservitive thinking with the strange belief that trickle down economics works.Conservitive thinking and ideology led to the g.f.c..Statistics show that the least intelligent members of a society tend to vote liberal as noted in america with the american tea party.Less education = more votes for conservitives which is why abbott took money away from public schools under howard and gave it to pr schools.Good luck aussies.
Thank God
yes , god looks after his own, Tony is well on the way to a long time in the Lodge. i bet the neighbors will be happy. its relieving to see that after so many labor stuff ups Australia will at last have a PM that will be respected by the world, the free world that is. Australia will then be able to deal with corrupt unions and their labor mates without obstruction. Bring on the royal Commissions.
