More than 100,000 people flooded Sydney's CBD to watch the annual Lunar New Year Twilight Parade.

The two-hour long spectacle was headed by an 80 metre long float modelled on the Chinese legend of 'Lady White Snake' - mythological half woman, half spirit who falls in love with a man.

More than 3,500 performers took part in the show, which organisers said was the biggest and most diverse they've attempted in the event's 17-year old history.

Vincent Wong, a performer from China's Shenzhen province known as 'DJ Vinka' said it was a chance to showcase contemporary Chinese culture.

"This time we'll bring something new to the performance to represent a new generation in China," said Wong.

Festival Director Gill Minervini said the show's diversity reflected multicultural Australia and it was designed to appeal to audiences of all backgrounds and ages.

"We all love a good show and celebrating a new beginning. A time to shed the old skin and start afresh," said Minervini.
