Cold reception for anti-Islam campaigner
Right-wing Dutch MP Geert Wilders has told SBS he is 'happy' to be in Australia despite getting a frosty reception from local politicians.
Right-wing Dutch MP Geert Wilders has told SBS he is "happy" to be in Australia despite getting a frosty reception from local politicians.
"Even your Prime Minister said not the most kind things about me, and your former Minister of Immigration stalled granting me a visa," he said.
"Freedom of speech is one of the most important things in our free society and I am happy to be here."
Wilders is visiting Melbourne at the invitation of Q Society, where he will speak about his anti-Islamic platform in what he calls a warning to Australia.
"If you really want to preserve your freedom, if you really want to preserve your identity as a country that is not Islamic, that is based on Christianity and Judaism... you should open your eyes, learn from the mistakes we made in Europe and make sure they don't happen here," he said.
Calling the Prophet Mohammad a “terrorist” and the Koran a “terrible book”, Wilders rallied against Australia’s multicultural policy, saying he believes it could lead to the persecution of non-Islamic groups.
“Islam has no room for anything but Islam, and Islam will get its way also in Australia. People who are non-Islamic, Jews, Christians and women, would be the first ones to pay the price.”

WOW
Wow. Grew up in a Muslim community and was never taught to hate. I grew up encountering racism & being constantly put down by the Western Media but learnt like others to cope. After reading these comments, I now see no reason to keep it bottled up. How dare you impose your discrimination, hypocrisy & double-standards onto us, and expect us not to be resentful of the West? How would you react if you were constantly vilified & told to leave , while you're a peaceful person just trying to live?
Don't Ignore the Writing on the Wall
Don't discard Gert as a right wing extremist. He voices the opionion of many in Holland. That Holland is not Holland any more. There are streets with warning signs on them that ordinary white people including the police cannot enter anymore, without fear of robbery or worse. Gert is a courageous man. He speaks, at great risk to both his popularity and his safety. Don't let Australia follow in Europe's footsteps.
Ben from Perth
Just one year ago we visited various countries in Europe. The situation there is very different to ours in Australia. Speaking to the 'original' people who live there, one understands how bad it can get and... they warned us not to let it get that far here! It's a slow process, but gaining momentum... Don't be deceived! Gert speaks up and wether you like it or not, the majority of us believe he is right...
Group Dynamics
Consider group dynamics. At an individual level, Americans are incredibly friendly and helpful, yet as a nation the USA has perpetrated some of the worst crimes of modern history. So it is with Muslims. One on one, they are as nice as anyone else, yet when their numbers reach a critical mass as it has in some middle eastern countries, you end up with a society that is far more oppressive and intolerant than 99% of its members. Mr Wilders seems to understand this, he just cannot express it.
Read a Book
For those referencing war torn countries where the main religion is Islam, and attributing their behaviour to all Muslims, you are ignorant. If you look back at history you will know that many of these countries were at peace before they were colonized by the West. These people have been oppressed and exploited, and as a result there have been aggressive acts, however this has nothing to do with their religion. We don't look at the terrible state of Columbia, or Ghana, and blame the religion do we? I say each to their own. We should be uniting as a country not dividing.
@Micky D - 400 yrs rubbish
They weren't in Australia 400 yrs ago. That is the same kind of rubbish Hitler used to legitimize the Nazis as master race via claims to being the true descendents of the Aryan race. Any artifacts or graves are probably evidence they were slaughtered by natives when they tried to impose their Islam on them. And in the end, multiculti doesn't mean allculti, nor are Geert's supporters all white. In the end, some things are just not compatible. You support the right to divorce don't you?
See before you talk.
As an airline pilot, I have been, dozens of times, to Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bahrain, UAE, and it is with all honesty that I can say that the more 'Islamic' the country, the more oppressive, intolerant, racist and anti-democratic it is. Those who promote multiculturalism, and attack Mr Wilders, very often do so from ignorance. Unless they have personally experienced these countries, then they have no idea what they are talking about.
Think hard
On tonight's news we see the so called guardians of tolerance thuggishly man handling and shouting down those trying to attend Mr Wilder's meeting in Melbourne. The intimidation so great that the police had to intervene to permit access. We really do need to think hard about our future before it is lost
Pot, kettle, black... Don't come back!!!
if we are to judge a group of people or their religion based actions alone, then all the English, Jews, Germans, Americans, and yes... those crazy Dutch, then the rest of the world should lock em all up for eternity. especially the 'slave starting' Dutch! My fellow Aussies, don't be ignorant. it's not bliss... it's pure stupidity, not to mention dangerous.
