Lay day called at surf tour opener

The world surfing tour opening event on the Gold Coast could be moved to Kirra Beach after organisers called a lay day.

Organisers have called a lay day at the world surfing tour opener on the Gold Coast and are contemplating moving the event to Kirra Beach on Thursday.

Originally hoping for a late morning start on Wednesday, a lay day was called at midday (AEST), with organisers anticipating better conditions later in the week.

It means defending men's world champion Joel Parkinson will have to wait to contest his sudden-death round two heat against wildcard Brent Dorrington as he tries to stay alive in the tournament.

Defending event champion Taj Burrow is also set to compete in an elimination heat after being beaten by local Bede Durbidge in an opening round heat on Tuesday.

A call will be made at 6.30am on Thursday as to where and when the competition will resume or if another lay day will be called.
