The two married couples are all ethnic Chinese but two are naturalised US citizens and two are US residents.
They were arrested at Los Angeles airport last week as they prepared to board a flight to China.
One of the men was a lead engineer on a research project for US Navy ships.
He is suspected of trying to smuggle sensitive information about the project to China.
