The United States' House of Representatives has overwhelmingly rejected a resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

The proposal called for all 160,000 American troops to be pulled out.

It was defeated by 403 votes to three after a heated debate.

The resolution was put forward by Democrat Representative John Murtha, a Vietnam veteran.
