Mr Lasry said Australia was well-placed to encourage countries like Singapore to embrace human rights.

Ngyen's body was accompanied by his mother and twin brother on an overnight flight from Singapore.

A funeral service is to be held in Melbourne's St Patrick's cathedral later this week.

The 25-year-old was hanged in Singapore on Friday after being convicted of importing heroin into Singapore in December 2002.

The Singaporean authorities had rejected calls for clemency for Mr Nguyen.
