British animal welfare officers are searching for a new home for Nelson the unlucky one-eyed duck after she was badly injured by an errant golf ball.

Nelson used to live on a golf course in Bridgwater, Somerset, in the south of England.

But because Nelson was half blind she sometimes collided with a flying golf ball.

After suffering a particularly nasty hit on the head, RSPCA officers took Nelson, who was initially thought to be a drake, to the West Hatch Wildlife Centre near Taunton.

Nelson is recovering and on the lookout for a new home.

Rupert Griffiths, wildlife manager at the centre, said: "Nelson came in to us because she was injured and it was decided it was unfair for her to go back to the golf course with her restricted sight.

"As she had been hit on the head with a golf ball once, the club was afraid it would happen again.

"Apart from missing an eye, Nelson is in excellent condition and would like to live with other `birdies' of the non-golfing variety."

Nobody at the centre or the golf course knows how Nelson lost her eye.

Potential new owners of Nelson must be able to provide plenty of space, access to a pond and a musn't play golf.
