Five Sudanese hostages held in Iraq have been freed after their government shut down its embassy in Baghdad in line with kidnappers' demands.

The Iraqi government has been unable to confirm the report.

Militants purporting to be members of the Al-Qaeda network had claimed responsibility for the kidnappings.

The five hostages included a Sudanese diplomat.
