The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) said the seven-tonne bull jumbo was killed on Sunday in the Tinderet forest, 290 kilometers (180 miles) northwest of Nairobi, after repeated complaints about its homicidal behavior.

KWS spokesman Gichuki Kabukuru confirmed that the elephant had been put down but could not provide specific details of the incident or the animal's history.

The state-run Kenya News Agency (KNA) said the angry bull, nicknamed "James," had long been identified as a menace by villagers around the forest where he had lived for 30 years.

KWS regional warden Francis Irungu said that "James" had killed at least six people, including a nine-year-old child.

The elephant’s latest rampage was in December after which residents demanded action.
