The chief judge in the trial of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has resigned, saying he was disappointed with the public reaction to his running of the trial.

Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin had been criticised by Iraqi and US officials for being too lenient on Saddam Hussein during his murder trial.

The resignation is a severe blow to attempts to bring the former dictator to justice.

Fellow judges are trying to persuade Judge Rizgar to reconsider.
