There has been no immediate news of its two-man crew.

Dubai-based al-Arabiya television, quoting one of its correspondents in the
field, said the helicopter was hit by a rocket and exploded into flames mid-air before plummeting to the ground near Mishadah, 30 kilometres north of the
capital.

"A task force Ironside helicopter did go down this morning at 8.20am local time, a military spokesman said.

"The status of the two-man crew is unknown at the moment."

He said an investigation into what caused the accident, a few kilometres north of the capital, is underway.

The incident comes after a US reconnaissance helicopter was apparently shot down near the northern city of Mosul, killing both pilots on board, in what appeared to be an insurgent attack.

Eight US soldiers and four civilians died a week earlier when their Black Hawk helicopter crashed near the restive town of Tal Afar in northwestern Iraq.
