Sherry Hsian Hwa Chow, 25, is facing charges of "indecently assaulting five boys at the Bahati children's rehabilitation centre in Nairobi between 2004 and last year" Nairobi Chief Magistrate Aggrey Muchelule said.

Prosecutors say police say they are still taking statements from other alleged victims who are turning up at stations to lodge complaints against her.

They also asked Ms Hwa Chow to return some of the boys’ belongings that she has been accused of taking.

She is also facing a separate immigration charge, for allegedly being in Kenya illegally.

Ms Hwa Chow pleaded not guilty to both charges and will be held until Thursday when the Judge will rule on her bail application.

The judge set April 18 as the trial date for Ms Hwa Chow, who arrived in Kenya in 2004 as a volunteer to help at the Bahati centre in a crime-prone, low-cost housing area in eastern Nairobi.

If convicted of sexual assault, Ms Hwa Chow will face a jail sentence to be determined by the judge.

A guilty verdict on the immigration charge could bring a maximum of six months in prison or a fine and deportation.
