Lawrence’s ruling in the Denpasar District Court, puts aside a request by prosecutors that the 28 year old be sentenced to a 20-year term. She will appeal her sentence.
The ruling for Rush was in line with the prosecutor’s request.
The 20 year old from Brisbane looked down and then up showing little emotion as the verdict was read out. He is also expected to appeal the decision.
Rush wore a large wooden crucifix around his neck, a symbol of the Christian faith he says he found again in jail.
Dressed in a white long sleeve shirt and dark trousers, Lawrence looked calm during the reading of the verdict but appeared confused after the sentence was handed down. She was seen repeatedly consulting her translator.
"Our client is a bit confused, although the translator had already told her that it was a life sentence, she asked us once again what the sentence was," her lawyer Hakosan Sihombing said.
Lawrence, who was taken away from the heavily guarded courtroom before she could speak with her father Bob Lawrence, appeared numb.
She burst into tears when she was returned to the holding cell behind the courtroom.
Family threats not proven
In her defence plea, Lawrence had said she had been forced to comply with the demand of the ring leaders because of threat made by one of the kingpins that her family would otherwise be killed.
Judge Ngurah Astawa, on the three-man panel, had said there was no evidence to back that claim.
Lawrence was discovered with 2.7 kilograms of heroin strapped to her body when she was arrested with four other Australians at Bali's Ngurah Rai airport while waiting to board a flight back home last April.
Four other gang members were arrested at a nearby hotel on the same day.
The nine Australians are on trial for involvement in the ring, accused of attempting to traffic more than 11 kilograms of heroin back to Australia.
