No decision has been made on where deputy state Coroner Christine Clements will deliver her findings but Palm Island council chairwoman Erykah Kyle argued that the findings should not be handed down in Townsville or Brisbane.

"Certainly it should be here," Ms Kyle told ABC radio. "We feel so because (otherwise) ... our people are not able to get in to Townsville to hear the results of it, and I think it's appropriate to have it here," she said.

The 36-year-old man died shortly after being taken into custody for public drunkenness in November 2004.

An initial autopsy showed that he suffered a ruptured liver and four broken ribs following a scuffle with arresting officer Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley.

The results later sparked rioting, in which Palm Island's police station and residential barracks were torched.
