"Yes, we have confirmed that it is definitely H5N1. We are following all the procedures in force in the European Union. The samples will now be examined by the (EU) reference laboratory in Weybridge (England)," said Jan Zmudzinksi of the Poland's national Pulawy laboratory, speaking to AFP.

Two die in Indonesia

Indonesian officials said a pregnant woman with symptoms of bird flu died on Monday in the capital Jakarta, while a boy who died elsewhere over the weekend was also suspected of carrying the virus.

The woman, 25, a resident of central Jakarta, died along with her foetus while she was being treated at Sulianti Saroso, the main hospital treating bird flu patients in the capital, said hospital spokesman Ilham Patu.

She was admitted last Wednesday and had been in contact with sick chickens, Patu told AFP.

Meanwhile a 10-year-old boy from Boyolali district in Central Java died on Saturday while he was being treated in hospital as a suspected carrier of H5N1 in the city of Solo, a doctor treating him said.

"He showed all the symptoms of bird flu infection, but he is still only suspected of having died of bird flu since the results of tests sent to the health ministry are not yet available," said Reviono, a lung specialist.

The boy was initially thought to have dengue fever and was only moved from a subdistrict health clinic to hospital on Wednesday, he said.

He was the third suspected bird flu fatality from Boyolali's Andong subdistrict. A 10-year-old boy from the area died on February 20 and his sister, aged 13, passed away a day later.
