The plan has been put forward by members of the federal government's Muslim Community Reference Group in a bid to combat more radical teaching.

A Melbourne Muslim cleric, Fehmi Naji el-Imam, co-chairs the clergy training group, one of the committees drawn up by the reference group.

He say the new course would be of great benefit to the community, because it would promote a uniquely Australian approach to the study of Islam.

"They can make the proper comments about it and explain to the people the real point of view of Islam towards it, instead of bringing the thoughts and ideas of Imams coming from overseas.

"All they know about is religion and not the environment.

"We want somebody to know about the environment and religion at the same time so we can live peacefully and in harmony."
