The Prime Minister, John Howard, says the federal government will offer whatever help is necessary for those affected by Tropical Cyclone Larry.
The most severe cyclone in far north Queensland in decades, Larry crossed the coast this morning at Innisfail, south of Cairns, its 290-kilometre-per-hour winds destroying crops and buildings.
Queensland's Premier, Peter Beattie, has already declared affected parts a natural disaster area.
And Mr Howard has promised the armed services will help in the clean-up as soon as the cyclone has passed.
"This is certainly a very fearful and challenging time for the people of far north Queensland and I want them to know that their fellow Australians are with them and will respond in an appropriate fashion to any requests for help."
A Queensland Police hotline has been set up for anyone concerned about friends or relatives affected by Cyclone Larry.
The Police Assistance Line number is 1800 100 188.
