Details are to be announced today of a special taskforce to help victims of Cyclone Larry, which hit north Queensland on Monday.

The team is to be headed by the former Australian Defence Force chief, Peter Cosgrove, who will be in the town of Innisfail for the announcement with the Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie.

General Cosgrove's appointment was announced amid widespread complaints that government relief has been too slow to arrive.

Mr Beattie says General Cosgrove will have a broad brief.

"It will include things like develop a plan for the communities impacted by Tropical Cyclone Larry, provide advice on the needs of the affected communities, co-ordinate the actions of peak community and business organisations, and provide regular reports to the Premier, and monitor and evaluate the implementation of the recovery process."
