The father of the Australian terrorist suspect, David Hicks, says he has been given a fair hearing today when he met the British High Commissioner in Canberra.

Terry Hicks had been hoping to meet the visiting British Prime Minister Tonly Blair to discuss the future of his son, being held at the United States military base at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba.

Mr Blair declined, but the High Commissioner agreed to meet him instead.

David Hicks has applied for British citizenship, on the ground that his mother was British-born, and in the hope that the British government would fight harder for his release than the Australian government has done.

Terry Hicks says the High Commissioner gave him a fair hearing, but no commitments about what Britain would do if his son wins British citizenship.

A final decision on the citizenship bid is expected within a month.
