Liberia's former president Charles Taylor has been arrested in a northern Nigerian town near the border with Cameroon, according to police.

Local reports said Taylor was arrested by police while attempting to cross into Cameroon.

Taylor bolted from his exile home in Calabar, south-east Nigeria on Tuesday.

He is wanted by the UN war crimes tribunal in Sierra Leone on 17 charges of crimes against humanity allegedly committed between 1997 and 2003 while president of Liberia.
