The Opposition's immigration spokesman, Tony Burke, says he's troubled by the Immigration Department's six-year detention of a mentally ill man.
The man, known only as Mr X, says he is from Bangladesh, but that country has refused to recognise him as a citizen.
The 33-year-old has type one diabetes and a psychiatric report suggests he will die from the illness within weeks if he is returned to Bangladesh.
Mr Burke says this is unacceptable.
"The Ombudsman has made some good, compassionate recommendations and I hope that the minister takes note of that.
"But I'm quite alarmed to see what the department was considering.
"They were considering deporting this man to Bangladesh, a man who is physically and mentally ill and within two to three weeks he would go into a diabetic coma and die."
