Three soldiers were killed and four hurt when Russian federal army positions came under rebel fire on 12 occasions while two others died in the capital Grozny when they came under fire from a passing car.

The remaining two were killed in fighting in the village of Gekhy in the Urus-Martan region south of Grozny. Two other Russian soldiers were injured as were two rebels. The incidents were not reported by Russian news agencies.

Russian federal troops directed from Moscow re-entered Chechnya in 1999 in what was described as an anti-terrorist operation to end renewed separatist violence following a previous 1994-1996 Chechen war.

In January President Vladimir Putin said that "Chechnya was completely back under the aegis of the Russian constitution" and that the "anti-terrorist operation" was over.

Guerrillas remain active in the province and government troops are reported to suffer casualties almost daily.
