Queensland Premier Peter Beattie expects Labor to lose today's Gaven by-election on the Gold Coast, and says he will be thankful if the swing against his government is less than ten per cent.

Gold Coast voters are casting their ballots after the resignation of controversial Labor member of parliament Robert Poole forced the by-election.

Throughout the three-week campaign, Mr Beattie has predicted a 15 to 20 per cent swing against Labor.

But today Mr Beattie says Labor candidate Phil Gray's chances of winning the seat have improved in the past week.

However he has not clarifed whether that's because of the Cyclone Larry relief efforts in north Queensland.
