The French opposition Socialist party has called on the French people to throw their weight behind a nationwide strike on Tuesday after President Jacques Chirac failed to win support for changes to an unpopular new labour law.

A poll indicated that two thirds of the public were unconvinced by the president's televised address in which he promised to water down the controversial youth employment law.

The changes would give employers one year instead of two in which workers under the age of 26 could be sacked and they would have to state the reason.

Students and unions have staged two months of protests against the new law.

A strike last Tuesday brought more than a million people onto the streets and caused major transport disruptions.
