The Federal Opposition Leader, Kim Beazley, has welcomed a nuclear safeguard agreement with China, which allows Australian uranium exports to go ahead.

The deal was signed by the Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao, and the Prime Minister, John Howard, in Canberra today.

The agreement specifies that Australian uranium will only be used for power generation in China.

Mr Beazley believes the safeguards are adequate.

"China has shown the world that it is a responsible nuclear power and that it is committed to the international community's efforts for nuclear non proliferation. this is important to Australia. we are about to become the world's largest supplier of uranium."
