Environmental groups have condemned the new uranium deal between AUSTRALIA and CHINA.

The agreement was signed today in Canberra by the Prime Minister, John Howard, and the Chinese Premier, Wen Jiabao.

Mr Howard says he's satisfied there are adequate safeguards under the deal to ensure that Australian uranium sold to China would not end up being used in nuclear weapons.

But Jim Green, from the environmental group, the Friends of the Earth, disagrees.

"It's an incredibly dodgy deal, and China has got nuclear weapons, it refuses to ratify the Comprehensive (Nuclear) Test Ban Treaty, the safeguards system is limited, as the International Atomic Energy Agency itself has acknowledged, and it's a disgraceful grab for cash which undermines global security."
