One of the two Australians who survived the Sea King helicopter crash in Indonesia a year ago says he lives with the memories of losing nine of his colleagues.

Leading Seaman Shane Warburton was on the helicopter when it went down on the island of Nias as it was on its way to help villagers after an earthquake.

Mr Warburton, who was dragged from the wreckage by locals, says he thought at first he might die.

He says he dragged the only other survivor, Corporal Scott Nichols, from the wreckage but could not do anything to help the others.

Mr Warburton joined 130 members of the victims' families at Australian Defence Force headquarters in Canberra yesterday for a memorial service.
