The chairman of the New South Wales Muslim Council has angrily denied media reports of plans to oust the Mufti of Australia.

The Australian newspaper claims a proposed national Council of Imams would mean Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hilali's removal as spiritual leader to the nation's Muslims.

The paper quotes the NSW Council's chairman, Neil Kadomi, as saying it would give specific community members the chance to choose a mufti.

But Mr Kadomi says the paper has misunderstood him, and the proposal is designed to include Sheikh Hilali in the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils.

"I tried to say that the Mufti of Australia should be part of the constitution, to have a say in the meetings of AFIC.

"Today, the Mufti is not a member of AFIC.

"We want to make him a member of AFIC, to have a say in the congress meetings."

The proposal will be discussed at the next AFIC national congress on April 29 and 30.
