Refugees detained in Sydney's Villawood detention centre have been exposed to asbestos.

Police say the centre is "riddled with asbestos" and they've told News Limited newspapers they want it closed.

The Department of Immigration last night reportedly advised 257 detainees they may have been exposed to deadly particles.

The NSW Police Association says Villawood should be closed, and detainees moved to other detention centres.
