The Customs Minister Chris Ellison says security has not been compromised at Sydney airport, despite revelations three cameras in the baggage-handling area were facing the wrong way.

The Opposition says the situation has put travellers in danger and could have affected the conviction of Schapelle Corby on drug smuggling charges in Bali.

Senator Ellison has confirmed someone tampered with security cameras in the baggage-handling area on three occasions between October 2004 and May 2005.

But he says the area was still under adequate surveillance.

"At no stage was security compromised at Sydney airport. We have 66 CCTV cameras in our baggage handling area.

They overlap with each other in the event that if one does not work and is faulty then another camera still has the same area under surveillance."

CORBY claimed Australian baggage handlers were responsible for stashing four kilograms of marijuana in her bodyboard bag before she was arrested in October 2004.
