Canberra has decided to review the way visas are granted to asylum seekers from the Indonesian province of Papua.

The move follows Indonesian protests at Australia's decision to grant asylum to 42 boat people from the troubled Indonesian province.

Indonesia says it should be consulted and asked to verify any more claims of asylum by Papuans.

The Prime Minister John Howard says the government will look at the visa process.

But he says everyone can be certain the government will continue to meet its international obligations.

"He said Australia has international obligations, and that there was a process and that process was followed. "

Mr Howard also says Australia should not support independence for Papua, because it would increase the threat of terrorism.
