The prime minister, John Howard, has announced the health sector will receive an extra 250-million dollars to train more doctors and nurses over the next four years.

Mr Howard says that many of the extra medical places will go to Victoria, because it has less places in comparison to the rest of the nation.

One hundred and sixty places will be specifically reserved for Victoria, and the other 240 places will be divided up amongst all states and territories.

Mr Howard says money will also be set aside to train nurses and has asked the state governments to match the federal funding.
