The Australian Greens are calling on the Prime Minister, John Howard, to guarantee he will not consider excising more parts of Australian territory from Australia's migration zone.
Green's Senator, Kerry Nettle, made the call, after the federal government said it would look into ways it might change the assessment of asylum seekers.
Senator Nettle says she is afraid the federal government needs to engage in discussion with the Indonesia military about human rights of the Papuans.
"For him to commit that he won't seek to excise northern parts of Australia."
"Also for his touted ideas about considering national interest, we are concerned about how that might be implemented into the law and that how that might impact on our ability to uphold the 1951 refugee convention."
"As Alexendar Downer said yesterday, he doesn't think its possible to feed that in without undermining our International obligation."
