Sports officials in Bangladesh have banned a shooter for life after he admitted assaulting an Australian woman during last month's Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

The Bangladesh Olympic Association says Toufiqur Rahman has been barred from taking part in national or international competitions for bringing his country into disrepute.

The 40-year-old athlete admitted the sexual assault and was fined $1000 by a Melbourne court.

No conviction was recorded against him after he agreed to apologise to the woman.
