The official spokesman for Indonesia's President says Australia should send any future boatloads of Papuan asylum-seekers back to Indonesia.

Andi Mallarangeng also says Prime Minister John Howard needs to go to Indonesia and explain Australia's actions.

Mr Mallarangeng says his country wants Australia to be fair in its treatment of the Papuan asylum seeker and ensure they are treated and processed in the same way as those from Middle Eastern countries.

"We saw them being stopped by Australian coastal guard."

"When Papuan came to Australia they were not stopped they were given special treatment and that's what we are questioning."

"I think we need to sit down and talk with Australia, leader to leader. "
