The Department of Immigration has rejected accusations it's ignored the recommendations of the Palmer report, by discharging mentally ill immigration detainees from psychiatric facilities.

Refugee advocates claim four suicidal and depressed asylum seekers were discharged from Adelaide's Glenside Hospital and returned to custody against medical advice.

They say a fifth mentally-ill detainee has been sent to a hotel where he is locked up 24 hours a day.

A department spokesman says the five were discharged after doctors said they no longer required acute inpatient care.

The spokesman says the asylum seeker in the hotel, could be deported, pending the outcome of a Federal court case.
