The Cole inquiry is likely to hear from the Prime Minister this week, if John Howard is called before it.

He would be expected to give his account of what the Federal government did in regard to A-W-B scandal.

AWB's lawyers have until 1 pm to apply to cross examine Mr Howard about his knowledge of 300-million dollars in kickbacks paid by the wheat exporter to the former Iraqi regime.

The Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer, has told the inquiry he had no specific recollection of warnings the government received about the situation over the past six years.

But Labor's Foreign Office spokesman, Kevin Rudd, says that explanation is not convincing and it was inconceivable that as Minister Mr Downer could deny it was his responsibility.
