A Sydney man expects to be released from prison in the Middle East next month, after his sentence was reduced on appeal.

31-year-old Saleh Jamal was jailed for five years with hard labour in February last year by a military court in Lebanon.

He was found guilty of forming a group which intended to be involved in criminal activity, but prosecutors claimed he should face terrorism charges.

Australia's Foreign Affairs Department says that claim has been rejected, Jamal's sentence has been cut to two years and with time already served, he expects to be released within weeks.
