The Industrial Commission has ordered Qantas to suspend redundancies at its Sydney maintenance facility.

The airline wants to move the work to Victoria, with the loss of up to 300 jobs.

The Commission says the unions have a right to be consulted about decisions that have a significant and detrimental impact on workers and their families.

The National Secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union, Doug Cameron, says Qantas has been given until May the 12th to comply.

"We have argued for some time that Qantas had to consult properly with the union. The Industrial Commission has supported our submissions on that. This is a great victory for the union and a great victory for the Australian public."
