Melbourne's Nepalese community is calling on the Federal government to condemn alleged human rights abuses in Nepal.

The Melbourne Solidarity Group for Democratic Nepal has held a protest in Federation Square, as demonstrations against Nepal's King Gyanendra in Kathmandu over the weekend resulted in a number of arrests.

A spokesman, Rajan Bhattachan says violence and unrest in Nepal is on the increase, with the country on the brink of becoming a failed state.

Mr Bhattachan says the King's forces have made numerous arbitrary arrests of journalists and activists and curtailed civil rights since a general strike began on the 6th of April.

"Nepal has been going through a very difficult phase. For the last 11 days, five people have been killed, more than 100 injured and more than one thousand have been detained. So what we are concerned about is for their wellbeing over there. So they can get press freedom, freedom of expression".
