The second cyclone in less than a month is heading towards the far north Queensland coast.

Cyclone Monica developed early this morning on the southern tip of Papua New Guinea.

Senior forecaster, David Alexander, says it's expected to intensify as it crosses the east coast of Cape York Peninsula by Wednesday morning.

"Its more than 600 kilometres off the coast of Cape York peninsula and moving in a south westerly direction at present. It will switch to a more westerly track later today and the area of threat is between Torres Strait and Cape Malibu, which is on the eastern coast of the Peninsula. We have "tropical cyclone watch" out at this stage. We don't think there's any risk of gales on the coast or islands for at least 24 hours."
