The results of a new survey suggest that more than one in five companies are actively looking for skilled workers from Africa, Britain and the United States.

The survey by the Human Resource firm, "Talent 2", attributes the trend to the high number of resignations in the Australian employment market.

Company spokeswoman Laura Mabikafola says businesses need to do more to keep their Australian workforce.

"Can they work through some performance plans? Is it about being more open with them? About identifying the next remuneration structure in an area to progress to?"

"So combating some of those things head-on. And to be honest and upfront with people, realising that there is a way to move forward and an opportunity for the future."

She says "People want to buy into that if they believe the organisation is committed to them."
