A fresh contingent of Australian troops and federal police officers has arrived on the Solomon Islands to help restore law and order following two days of rioting in the capital, Honiara.

Australia's contribution to the Regional Assistance Mission has been increased by 110 troops and 70 additional police officers.

There has been widespread looting throughout Honiara, some areas are considered no-go zones and power has been cut to parts of the main island.

The federal government has made seats available on defence force aircraft and several Australians were among a group of some 50 evacuees who flew in to Townsville last night.
