More than a thousand people could be evacuated and major highways blocked as Cyclone Monica causes widespread flooding across far north Queensland.

The Cyclone made landfall yesterday afternoon just south of Lockhart River in the Cape York, causing damage to around 15 per cent of homes and destroying large amounts of vegetation.

But of greater worry is the torrential rain it's dumping in Cairns, eight-hundred kilometres to the south.

A Cairns City Council spokesman says the city's main water supply, Copperlode Dam, is rapidly rising.

Evacuations are planned if the dam reaches the critical two metre mark.
