The Federal Government is urging Australians to stay away from Nepal, where deadly protests in Kathmandu have drawn over 100-thousand people.

At least three people were killed after police opened fire on demonstrators heading towards the royal palace in the nation's capital.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory suggesting Australians reconsider travelling to Nepal.

The department urges any Australians already there to use extreme caution.

The protests are directed at King Gyanendra, calling on him to give up direct rule and restore democracy.

The demonstrators gathered on the outskirts of Kathmandu after the city centre was placed under a strict curfew.

Security forces had orders to shoot on sight.
