An Australian soldier has been killed in Iraq, the Australian Defence Force says.

The ADF issued a statement saying the soldier received a single gunshot wound on Friday afternoon,

The incident was not related to combat action and no other personnel were injured during the incident.

The soldier had been serving with the Operation Catalyst Security Detachment in Baghdad working for the reconstruction of the country.

Defence officers have informed the soldier's next of kin, the ADF said.

The soldier's name, along with further details of the incident, will not be released until a full investigation has been completed.

The man is the first Australian soldier to die in Iraq.
