A new study suggests overeating is the major cause for high rates of childhood obesity in Australia.

The study, commissioned by the New South Wales state government showed that 23% of girls and 26% of boys surveyed were overweight or obese.

But the study of more than 5 thousand school students across New South Wales suggests it's poor diets, rather than a lack of exercise that is causing the problem.

More than 80% of the children who took part in the survey were active for at least one-hour per day.

New South Wales Health Minister, John Hatzistergos says the results suggest a review of advertising foods to children is needed.

“The whole issue of marketing and promotion of foods which are high in fat and sugar is certainly one that needs attention.” Mr Hatzistergos said.

“The reality is that you can't have a situation whereby these foods are going to be promoted in the same way they have been in the past.”
