An army board of inquiry will examine the circumstances under which an Australian soldier in Baghdad died after accidentally shooting himself in the head.
Few details of the incident are available, but speculation has already pointed to the role of the army's F88 Steyr assault rifle.
It's not known what weapon was involved in this tragedy, although a majority of Australian soldiers carry the Steyr, which has been implicated in a number of accidents in the recent past.
The Federal Defence Minister Brendan Nelson says the accident happened as the unnamed soldier was cleaning his gun.
And Dr Nelson says several investigations will be held to determine the cause of death.
"We expect that it would take about two days for the body to be returned to Australia. It will be the subject of course of the coroners inquiry. There will also be a military inquiry into the circumstances of the death itself".
